About Justice for Janitors

Justice for Janitors was formed in Denver in 1985. The campaign is about hard-working janitors uniting for fair working conditions with support from our communities.  Over the years, Justice for Janitors has worked to provide better wages, basic benefits, and job security for janitors who clean buildings in major cities and suburbs. Last year, 10,000 SEIU janitors across the U.S. joined the Justice for Janitors movement.

Justice for Janitors Day – June 15

Every June 15, Justice for Janitors Day, janitors and community supporters demonstrate to call attention to our fight for the American Dream.

 Justice for Janitors Day: Origins

Justice for Janitors Day was established after janitors in Los Angeles were beaten by police during a peaceful demonstration against the cleaning contractor ISS, on June 15, 1990. The public outrage that generated from this incident resulted in ISS agreeing to recognize L.A. janitors in a union.

In remembrance of that day, SEIU janitors and supporters take action every June 15 in cities nationwide and in countries around the world.

Bread and Roses

Bread and Roses Movie PosterAn award-winning movie that played in theaters across the country in 2001, Bread and Roses is about the struggle of invisible office cleaners to gain dignity and respect at work.

The story is fictional, but is based on the inspirational, real-life story of the Los Angeles janitors who beat the odds to win better lives through SEIU's Justice for Janitors campaign. Look for it in your video store.
