What is COPE?

SEIU’s Committee on Political Education (COPE for short) is one way working people can influence political decisions made locally, in our state capitols and in Washington, DC. COPE is the way individual members – contributing just a few dollars a month – can combine efforts to have a strong, united voice that increases our chances that elected officials will listen and respond to our issues and concerns.

Where do COPE dollars go?

Contributions to worker-friendly candidates, both Democrat and Republican, are important.  But direct political contributions are only a small portion of COPE expenditures.  Most of the money supports member political activity – including lobby days, rallies, phone banking and mailings – as well as staff to coordinate these activities and lobby lawmakers.  Union members gain political power by taking an active part in politics, including pooling their contributions.

Why can’t dues money be used for COPE?

Federal law prohibits the use of dues dollars for politics.  To have a strong political program that can win healthcare and protect jobs, union members must show their support with separate contributions to the political action fund.

Why should I contribute to COPE?

Elected officials make decisions that affect our jobs and our families.  It is up to us to hold our elected representatives accountable.  Alone, none of us have enough money or influence to do that.  Collectively, the 1.8 million members of SEIU have that power.  The small amount you give, combined with everyone else’s, makes SEIU one of the strongest political powers in the U.S.  Become a part of that power.  Sign up and start making COPE contributions today! *
